Last year, while walking near Macy Street with a friend, I came across an interactive art installation that caught a lot of people’s attention. When someone touched the display, it automatically took their photo and showed it on the screen, and people really loved the experience. That moment stayed with me, and it inspired me to create my own Christmas-themed interactive project.
Since photo booths like “인생네컷” are really popular these days, I thought it would be fun to design my own version, something playful and personal where people could decorate their photos in real time. Instead of using a pen tool, I wanted to make the interaction more engaging by letting people draw directly with their hands.
For my project, I used p5.js to build an interactive photo-decorating system. On the left side, I illustrated a Christmas gift box that functions as an eraser, and on the right side, I created a textured paintbrush tool for drawing. I also programmed hand-tracking gestures so that when you open your right hand, the drawing starts or stops. My goal was to create a small Christmas “photo studio” where families, friends, or couples could take a photo together and decorate it in a fun and festive way.
The most challenging part was assigning different functionalities to each hand, making the left hand act as an eraser while the right hand became the drawing tool. It took a lot of trial and error, but I’m proud that the final interaction works smoothly and supports the original concept.
